Doha poisonings - letter to British Minister Amanda Milling

The Rt. Hon. Amanda Milling, MP

Minister of State for Eastern Europe and the Middle East

Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office

King Charles Street

London SW1A 2AH

16 December 2022

Dear Minister Milling,

Re: World Cup Doha poisonings

I refer to the 'Kuwaiti Sheikhs' affair, a dispute between rival members of the Kuwaiti Royal Family about forged videos, in respect of which you are the Minister in charge and I am a victim.

I was poisoned with chloral hydrate, a 1970's IRA toxin, surreptitiously placed in my beer in a bar in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia, on Monday 5 December 2022.

At approximately the same time, a US journalist covering the World Cup was poisoned with the same obscure substance in Doha, Qatar, where he later died in hospital. I was lucky to live. Chloral hydrate (also known as 'Mickey Finn' in Northern Ireland as used by the Irish Republican Army) is lethal in more than 50 per cent of cases. The key to survival is the very unusual antidote treatment, which I was fortunate enough to receive and my dead US colleague, Grant Wahl, was not.

Mr Wahl and I had one thing in common: we were investigating the corruption engineered in large part by the renegade member of the Kuwaiti Royal Family, Mr Ahmed Al-Sabah, that induced the World Cup to be held in Qatar.

It would seem that Mr Al-Sabah had his agents try to murder us. In my case he failed (but only just); in the other case he succeeded.

I would like to know what His Majesty's Government, in respect of which you are the responsible Minister, are doing about this. It is a fair request.

However you have blocked me from your government email account, so that we can no longer be in mutual rapid contact.

This is outrageous behaviour on your part. A British citizen abroad has been subject to an attempted murder by foreign agents. None of this is disputed by your own Civil Service or His Majesty's Government intelligence services. You ought to be taking personal charge of the situation, not blocking your email address to a victim of this appalling behaviour who has every legitimate interest in communicating with you.

Yours sincerely

Matthew Parish
